Coda (2011)

A durational performance installation

Date: March 14, 2011 – April 8, 2011
Venue: Boomerang Gallery, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Presented as part of aWay: An International Graduate Student Exhibition
Curated by Vipash Purichanont and Bana Kattan

Ten posters, each containing an individual number were displayed in a pop-up storefront gallery; they form a telephone number that can be dialed to access this audio recording of the artist recalling an incident on the final night of working as a go-go dancer in New York City, where he sold himself to a patron for USD $300. Over the course of the exhibition, the artist weathers these posters periodically until these numbers are rendered illegible.

These posters are exhibited with USD $306, a vial containing the remains of a durational performance installation Annuit Cœptis that took place from December 11, 2010 until January 22, 2011 in the Sullivan Galleries, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

As part of Annuit Cœptis, the artist extracted the ‘Eye of Providence’ from 306 dollar bills, which he earned working as a go-go dancer from January 16 until January 23, 2010. These bills were disseminated across the globe over the course of the installation via the postal service to his friends, family and acquaintances.
